ARTIST INFO

Marco Lewis (real name Emiliano Austruy) made his first steps in December 2008, at the age of 10, as the drummer and lead singer of a Blues/Rock cover band. From there followed 10 years of gigs and stage, a lot of opening parts for well known artists such as Dc Feelgood, Bony Fields, Jerry Joe Weise, The Pogues, Stéphane Sanseverino... More than 200 shows with a trio, then with a duet. Some significant musical experiences will give him, at a very early age, the taste for diversity, and for exploring new musical approaches, new singular musical atmospheres.

Although he started music very young, it's in 2013, during a trip to New York where he went to a show of the American singer-songwriter Jason Isbell, that Marco Lewis was deeply touched by the sincerity that music can demonstrate. He then truly realized that he wouldn't be able to do anything but to try to live through and for music. With the only goal of making others feel what he himself felt that day - a feeling of lucidity about some of his future choices and immense joy. That day marked a true turning point in his musical commitment, and truly inaugurated his creative process.

At the age of 18, he left for Paris to pursue his studies at the American School of Modern Music. Where he learned through the guidance of graduated teachers from, among others, Berklee College of Music (Cédric Hanriot, Brad Thomas Ackley, James Robbins, Charles Turner, Tim Miller...). With some of them, he had the chance to collaborate on musical projects, through which he matured his personal musical ambitions. Stated by his teachers as a particularly curious and diligent musician, he stands out for his stage presence and his commitment to the public. Also a backing singer for the Paris Gospel Choir, multi-instrumentalist (voice, drums, guitar, piano), producer, composer and arranger, Marco Lewis works to diversify his approaches, in order to meet the high demands of the current artistic and musical environment.

The year 2019 marked a new stage on his journey, with the creation of the band “Go on a Journey” and the release of his first album “Esperanza”.

Determined to follow his path, to give substance to his musical ambitions through his projects, Marco Lewis then left to resume his studies at The New School of Jazz of New York in September 2019. After many unforgettable lessons with exceptional musicians from the New York Pop and Jazz scene (Jeffery Miller, Sean Mason, Ron Carter, Christian Sands, Jon Batiste, John Legend, Mark Turner, Mike Stern), he was forced to return to France in March 2020 because of the unfortunate health crisis. He then began a long process of composition which led him to complete his study project started in New York, "Out Of Circus", a multi-artistic project (coming soon).

In January 2022, Marco Lewis resumed his studies at The New School, which he completed in July of the same year.

After having been the official musician at the restaurant “La table” of the prestigious hotel, “Le Royal Mansour” in Marrakech for 3 months, he created “Around the Sound”, an original project of musical covers, where the idea is to perform some of his favorite songs in or in front of a significant place for the composer of this song.

Which then led him to Ireland, then to the USA for a few months.

A very unique way of paying tribute to some of his greatest influences, while traveling and documenting the experience to bring it to life for the people who follow him.

Considering his musical approach and goals, Marco Lewis defines his music as "Indie-Folk/Pop". But if he does not allow himself to be so easily locked up into a particular musical style, this is above all due to his musical ambition “to put the unstable into the stable”. The music of Marco Lewis draws from different sources of inspiration and has its roots in Jazz as well as Folk, Pop, Gospel and Blues, and his compositions appear as a crossroads of genres, a melting pot musical influences. The atmosphere that rises up from this musical experience is unique, and the compositions here are similar to a journey we can enjoy step by step or, on the opposite, experience in one go.

Speaking about his universe, Marco Lewis says:

“Music is above all a human adventure. A smile must punctuate each end of the piece, and, if possible, technique and work must give way to direct emotion. I seek neither complexity in itself nor simplicity for its own sake, I just want words and music to find an echo in the hearts of the people who'll listen to these songs. I don't want to give songs to understand, I want to give songs to feel. Time is something that has always fascinated me. So I wanted to shake it up musically. Put unstable elements into stable ones, Jazz into Folk, sprinkle with Pop, add Blues and Gospel... and shake it all up. Music is to me like a painting, a picture, or like a novel, a story, with its twists and turns. I'm a little tired of the verse/chorus formats, and I tried to imagine each song as a journey, matching lyrics, harmony and orchestration. I hope people, while listening to these songs, will have the feeling of going somewhere else for a second, into new lands, to better return to known things. I try to be sincere, to appear as I am, vulnerable, because, in my opinion, this is the first step of being free with oneself and being able to travel for and with others.”

And I hope to travel with you.
